24 August 2014: Traveled to Kasungu to try to put a collar on a lion there. Several lions have been seen in the park at different times, but no one knows their total numbers or distribution. We have a satellite collar to place on one in order to follow their movements, but they are elusive. This night a lion was heard roaring in the park, so we (WERU and Wild Dog Conservation Malawi) used various sounds including lion roars, hyena social calls, and distressed prey to try to call in the lion to dart it. We were not successful at calling in the lion, but we did call in a leopard!
