In commemoration of World Wildlife Day 2016, H.E. Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, and 14 Ambassadors, High Commissioners and Honorary Consuls have pledged their support for the Stop Wildlife Crime campaign, which is a joint initiative between the Government of Malawi and the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust. They have joined together to tell all residents citizens and visitors to the Warm Heart of Africa to:
- Say no to ivory: At current rates of poaching to satisfy the demand for ivory, elephants could go extinct.
- Know the law: it is illegal to buy, sell or possess ivory without a licence. It can lead to prosecution, including custodial sentences.
- Report any suspicious activity: call 088 44 888 999 or 01759 833, or the new toll-free hotline, 5152.
- Spread the word: talk to friends and family about the impacts of wildlife crime and the law
- You can read an article published in the Daily Times today here, or hear what the UN has to say about the campaign here. The pledge film will be released in April, so watch this space! In the meantime, click on the photos below to hear what they have to say.
