Three Natural Resource Committees (NRC’s) have received awards amounting to MK 1 million for their exceptional contribution to wildlife law enforcement this month. The outstanding NRC’s were involved in the confiscation of Muzzle loading guns, removal of snares, help the DNPW in arresting the poachers, conducting patrols around the park and clearing the boundaries of the protected areas.

The awarded NRC’s were: Kankhoka (awarded MK 400,000), Chankhalamu (MK 350,000) and Zaro (MK 250,000).  Local communities around protected areas are critical to wildlife law enforcement, and financial rewards are one simple way of motivating those communities to act.

Presenting the trophy were Chiefs Chikulamayembe and Inkosi Mpherembe in the presence of the Northern Divisional Manager for the Department of National Parks & Wildlife and representatives from Lilongwe Wildlife Trust.
