It’s rainy season and our education team rolled out their annual series of tree planting activities with schools around Lilongwe.
Not only did they take advantage of the land’s fertility but the students also gained knowledge on tree cultivation, care and maintenance. Some received seedlings from the tree nursery at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre. Other schools, who’d developed their own nurseries, were provided with polythene tubes and seeds. More than 1,000 seedlings were distributed and about 25 schools have since benefitted from this exercise. The activities usually run from January to March, following which a survival rate check is conducted soon after the rains end, with emphasis on regular watering to ensure healthy tree growth. Additionally, the team helps to raise awareness on the importance of tree planting through delivery of forest & deforestation modules in schools.
