It might not be at the top of most people’s safari destination list, but that’s part of what makes Liwonde National Park so special. Its 550 square kilometres of woodlands and floodplains are full of elephants, lion, cheetah, buffalo, hippos, antelope and 400 species of birds but – unlike other parks such as Chobe in Botswana and South Luangwa in Zambia – wonderfully empty of people.
Once decimated by poaching, Liwonde has been the centre of some incredible wildlife translocations in recent years, including African Parks‘ relocation of 336 elephants to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in 2017. Cheetah were also reintroduced in 2017, bringing the species back to the park for the first time in 100 years, and the park’s first cheetah cubs have just been born. And this year, 10 lions were reintroduced from Majete Wildlife Reserve and South Africa.
