Last week some of our team took a trip to the southern part of Malawi to increase awareness on illicit wildlife crime, and to encourage Malawians to get involved in the fight against it.

A presentation was successfully delivered to 22 senior officers at Chileka Airport from departments including Airport staff, Air Cargo, Civil Aviation and the Immigration and Police officers. And to keep the momentum up the team distributed over 50 wildlife crime posters in both English and Chichewa at the airport and 2 banners were put up within the airport waiting room and VIP lounge.

A further presentation was made to the Parks and Wildlife officers in Liwonde National Park who then attended the following presentations made to 64 Village Natural Resources Management Committees and Teachers from the communities and schools surrounding Liwonde National Park.

Over 150 posters were then distributed to lodges and road blocks in and around the Liwonde, Blantyre and Zomba areas in order to increase awareness as much as possible. And about 170 posters were distributed to all the police road blocks from Blantyre to Liwonde via Zomba, and during these stop overs, a talk was given to the police officers about wildlife crime and how they can help.

There is a very big gap in knowledge about environmental education in many parts of the country so we are trying our best to spread our knowledge and resources in order to implement anti-wildlife crime practices further afield.
