Why not satisfy all of these urges and join us at Malawi’s only accredited wildlife sanctuary for our brand new course in Wildlife Rehabilitation!

Responsible wildlife sanctuaries are a fantastic way to lend a hand to the rehabilitation of animals, and go home with memories of those animals that will last a lifetime knowing that you’ve helped them along their way. However, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be there long enough to see the entire rehabilitation process, from rescue to release. So, here at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, we’ve introduced a brand new intensive 7-day course in Wildlife Rehabilitation to pass on the knowledge we have gathered over years of success in the field.

Expect detailed lectures, practicals and discussions delving into the various forms of wildlife rehabilitation for a range of African species. The course also includes an exclusive trip to one of our release sites in the heart of the beautiful Kasungu National Park, where we’ve so far released four primate troops.

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre currently looks after almost 200 wild animals that have predominantly been rescued from the pet and bushmeat trades that are sadly still prevalent in Malawi. Our aim is to release these animals wherever possible, so as soon as one arrives in our care they are given a tailored rehabilitation plan to ensure them the best possible chance of being able to return to the wild.

There are some animals for which this process is more straightforward, such as hedgehogs and tortoises, and some that are downright complicated, like primates and antelopes! Our team adjusts their plan to that specific individual to ensure them the best care in a way that avoids humanisation, which can severely affect their chances of release.

We are now offering the chance to learn from our experts just how this is approached from each stage in their rehabilitation – this includes rescue, orphan care, feeding, enrichment, enclosure design, veterinary care, observation techniques right through to release and monitoring. You can be sure all bases are covered!

And just to make your experience even more rounded, we have a couple of options up our sleeve to satisfy those wild adventurers! You can either put your learning into practice by extending your stay with a volunteer placement at LWC, or add on a 4 day safari to the incredible South Luangwa National Park.

So, however long you have and whatever your background, LWC’s Wildlife Rehabilitation course is the perfect way to learn something new, meet new and likeminded people, and have a great African adventure. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed!

Course only: arriving Mon 4th July, flying out Tues 12th July OR arriving Mon 22nd August, flying out 30th August = £800 (Incl. food, dorm accom, airport transfers, course materials, t-shirt & certificate – accom. upgrades available)

*Course plus 4 day budget safari to South Luangwa: arriving Mon 4th July, flying out Sat 15th July OR arriving Mon 22nd August, flying out Sat 3rd September = £1420

**LWC volunteering: Additional weeks volunteering at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre after the course = £350 per week

WHO CAN APPLY?  The course will be given at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre and is ideal for students or graduates who want to gain more practical knowledge and experience in Wildlife Rehabilitation, but anyone with a willingness to learn and interest in wildlife is welcome.

The course will be led by our Animal Care Manager, Jasper Iepema, who has over 15 years’ experience in wildlife rehabilitation and worked with many different wildlife species. Topics which will be addressed in this course are:

• Rescue and intake
• Disease screening and control
• Orphan care
• General rehabilitation techniques
• Animal capture and restraint
• Behavioural observation techniques
• Release and monitoring techniques
