This tiny African scops owl was brought in recently from Mchinji by a few people very concerned about its welfare. They had spotted it on the ground being bothered by dogs in the middle of the day. Not knowing what to do they kept an close eye on it before deciding the best thing was to bring it in to us to make sure all was well. Once young owls have fallen from the nest it’s likely that their mother won’t go looking for them so it was definitely the right thing to do!
African scops owls only grow to around 16cm when adults and weigh just 65g. This one is estimated to be around 6-8 weeks, is feeding well and keeping our volunteer fascinated! We will keep you updated on his progress and journey back to the wild…
