This week the Government of Malawi, in collaboration with Lilongwe Wildlife Trust and UN Environment, will announce plans for an ambitious new communications campaign at the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya – the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment.
Under the theme, ‘Innovative Solutions to Environmental Challenges and Sustainable Consumption and Production’, the Assembly will bring together governments, entrepreneurs, activists and others to spur action on tackling the most world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
Malawi’s new campaign – ‘A New Deal for Nature and People’ – will build on its considerable success in fighting the illegal wildlife trade and apply the same progressive approach to protect its wider natural heritage.
As a first step, research will be conducted into people’s attitudes and behaviours in relation to nature. The results will inform a nationwide communications strategy and the development of an ‘ecological consciousness score’ that will be used to measure attitudinal change. The ultimate aim of the campaign is to create behaviour change that drives more sustainable environmental practices, and, in doing so, protects Malawi’s rich natural heritage.
The campaign will be launched at a special event on 13th March 2019, featuring speakers from the Government of Malawi and UN Environment.
